About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the mechanical engineering industry with skilled tradespeople who are able to safely and independently perform engineering tasks within their chosen discipline, to industry standards.
This qualification is intended for people already working within the industry to gain a credential that will enhance their employment opportunities and/or people that wish to enter the mechanical engineering industry.
Graduates will be able to operate independently as Mechanical Engineering tradespeople in their chosen discipline, in the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic Requirements 40 credits NCEA Level 1, including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits OR NZ2715 New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3) Alternative Requirements Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills may be approved for alternative entry. Ara literacy and numeracy assessments are available. Additional Requirements To successfully complete this programme of study, students must be employed in the mechanical engineering industry at time of study. Students must enter into a 3-way training agreement between the student, employer and Ara. English Requirements If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment. IELTS 5.5 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. Students who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.
