Entry requirements

Ākonga must be full or part-time employees, self-employed contractors or volunteers working in a Te Mahi Ako-approved workplace setting (signed Workplace Relationship Agreement (WRA))*.

Non-domestic ākonga can be enrolled onto this programme if they are working in a Te Mahi Ako approved workplace and have a current visa that allows them to work.

Ākonga are required to complete a swim proficiency test as part of their assessment, which includes swimming 200 metres in under 6 minutes, swimming 50 metres breaststroke, 25 metres freestyle, treading water for 5 minutes, and retrieving an object from the bottom of the pool. Additionally, before the final award of this micro-credential, ākonga must hold a current first aid certificate that includes unit standards 6400, 6401, and 6402, or an equivalent qualification.

*If a self-employed contractor operates independently of an established workplace they need to provide evidence of ongoing training and of how they will access the resources necessary to complete the assessments necessary to complete the qualification.

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The aim of this micro-credential (MC) is to equip pool lifeguards in the aquatics sector with essential knowledge and skills for managing swimmer safety in an aquatic facility through the application of safe practices and responding effectively to emergencies.

This micro-credential is for ākonga who have recently gained a role within an aquatic facility as Pool Lifeguard or are already employed in an aquatic facility in another role that requires them to be competent in swimmer safety.
