About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is intended for people who are aware of the importance of animals in society, and who intend to work as a veterinary nurse in clinical veterinary/animal healthcare settings such as companion animal veterinary clinics, equine veterinary clinics, or alongside veterinarians providing companion animal or equine healthcare services in a variety of settings.

Graduates will have technical knowledge and skills to work as a veterinary nurse in a clinical veterinary setting. They will have a high level of responsibility and discretion within their scope of practice, in a wide range of dynamic and often unpredictable situations and following protocols in all aspects of clinical veterinary practice or animal healthcare settings.

The qualification is stranded to recognise the specialist skills required for providing veterinary nursing care to either companion animal or equine veterinary practices.

Graduates may be eligible to apply for registration with the Allied Veterinary Professional Regulatory Council of New Zealand.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

To be admitted to this programme, applicants must hold one of the following: NCEA Level 2 or higher including: a minimum of 12 NCEA credits in English at Level 2; a minimum of 12 NCEA credits in Mathematics at Level 1; and a minimum of 12 credits of relevant science at Level 1. OR a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 3 or above; OR A recognised equivalent. All applicants must complete a health declaration and declaration of any criminal conviction to ensure fitness to practice prior to acceptance into the programme. Special and discretionary admission is also available. International learners require IELTS (Academic 5.5 with no individual score lover than 5 from a single test taken in the proceeding 2 years; or an equivalent.
