About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain engine room and auxiliary equipment with minimum supervision to the level of Marine Engineer Class 5 (MEC 5) certification under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
Graduates will generally operate under limited supervision from the chief engineer and the vessel master.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Students must have a completed MEC6 MNZ Training Record Book. If their completed MEC6 workbook is more than one year old, then they will need to complete another MEC6 workbook which can be completed concurrently with this qualification. Academic requirements There are no minimum academic requirements for entry. English language requirements All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 5.5 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent. Other requirements It is recommended that applicants be currently employed within a commercial maritime operation and/or have ongoing access to commercial vessels and MNZ qualified skippers to enable the guided learning whilst at sea.
