About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the outdoor and adventure education sector with practitioners who are capable of operating independently in a personal capacity, and who have the skills and underpinning pedagogy to safely instruct or guide a range of outdoor activities.
Graduates will be capable of operating under indirect supervision in familiar environments and under direct supervision in unfamiliar environments.
Graduates will contribute to the cultural, social, environmental and economic wellbeing of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Graduates of this qualification will be eligible to apply for full registration on the New Zealand Register of Recreation Professionals (NZRRP).
Key Information for Students
Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
Minimum of 19 years of age. Have completed Hillary Outdoors New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor and Adventure Education (multi-skilled) Level 4 or comparable qualification with another tertiary provider. Or have the equivalent proven skills and experience. Show a genuine interest and enthusiasm to instruct and lead others in the outdoors. Have a solid base of technical skills in a range of outdoor activities. Have work experience in a leadership role. Have a good level of physical fitness to withstand the demands of the course. Be water confident. Hold a current first aid certificate. Be self-motivated, with a responsible attitude and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people and as part of a team. Academic - English language requirements - all applicants must have a standard of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. International students or students for whom English is not their first language will have to meet the requirements as set out by NZQA and provide evidence of this gained in the last two years.
