About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the General Aviation sector of the aviation industry with graduates who have attained sufficient operational and theoretical knowledge and practical skills to operate small single or multi-engine aircraft as commercial pilots independently or with another pilot, and/or associated support staff in flight planning and aircraft operations.

This qualification is suitable for people seeking to gain a private pilot licence and commercial pilot licence, or those who already hold a private pilot licence.

The qualification has two elective strands for pilots to specialise in flying either small single or multi-engine aeroplanes, or helicopters.

Graduates will meet the eligibility requirements to operate as commercial pilots, including the privileges of the private pilot licence, under the appropriate Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAANZ) rules for General Aviation.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Applicants must (Aug-Nov of each year for classes starting mid-January): - Be aged 18 years or older at time of programme start - Have been offered a placement after completing the application process which includes a short interview/flight, enrolment form, reference, short essay, and CV provision - Be able to hold a NZ CAA Class 01 flight medical certificate - Be able to pass the CAA's Fit and Proper Persons assessment - Hold a recent passing credit on Aspeq's RadioTelephony (or comparable) exam - Demonstrate English proficiency of IELTS 5.0 or better - All finances will be managed through the Fee-Protect Student Trust system - Have NCEA Level 2 or other evidence of appropriate academic merit (e.g. flight theory exams) - International students must also carry personal health insurance meeting requirements during the entire period of study.
