About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification will provide the outdoor snow sector with individuals who can evaluate and manage avalanche risk to people and infrastructure while operating in dynamic outdoor contexts.

This qualification is intended to benefit the sector by advancing avalanche risk management knowledge and practices to reduce accidents and near misses in alpine environments.

Graduates who hold an optional strand will be able to provide operational leadership in that specific aspect of the avalanche risk management sector.

Graduates of this qualification are able to assume responsibility for other team members within an avalanche risk management programme, while working under a recognised Safety Management System (SMS).

Graduates of this qualification will have met the requirements of the Avalanche Stage 2 industry award.

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements New Zealand Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management (Level 5) or equivalent English language requirements All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years with no less than 5.5 in any band or equivalent. Otago Polytechnic s policy AP0520.03 English Language Requirements for Those for whom English is an Additional Language also applies.
