About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is for people who want to develop a broad understanding of tikanga in a specialist field founded on a Māori worldview.
Graduates of this qualification will have a broad range of knowledge and skills to support and participate in the practice of tikanga under limited supervision.
Graduates of this qualification will be able perform and apply knowledge fundamental to tikanga practices across the community in general.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Akonga must be at least 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a person designated under sections from 38 to 45 of the Education and Training Act 2020, by a school principal from a school in which the prospective akonga is registered, or by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education. Akonga must be New Zealand citizens (or citizens of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent residents. Akonga may only enrol in an additional part-time programme if the academic workload has been considered achievable (as determined by the Takiwa Academic Committee), and the additional enrolment does not exceed EFTS limits in accordance with TEC Funding Conditions. Entry Criteria Akonga must meet the following programme-specific requirements: Have an interest in learning about Maori cultural practices that may be applied at home, on the marae and/or within their respective areas of work. Demonstrate existing tikanga skill and knowledge at the required level, and Attend an interview, or information hui, with a kaiako.
