About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The qualification is designed to provide the building and construction industry with trained people who have achieved the practical skills and knowledge required to construct, repair and install building structures to the level required of a commercially competent carpenter.

This qualification is for people working as carpenters, and for people intending to work as carpenters in the construction industry.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic Requirements 40 credits NCEA Level 1, including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits, OR New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) Carpentry strand Alternative Requirements Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills may be approved for alternative entry. Ara literacy and numeracy assessments are available. Additional Requirements To successfully complete this programme of study, candidates must be employed in the Carpentry industry at time of study. Candidates must enter into a 3-way training agreement between the candidate, employer and Ara. English Requirements If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment. IELTS 5.5 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
