About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wine industry with people who have skills and knowledge to work as entry level cellar hands in wine cellar operations.

This is an entry level qualification, designed for people new to the industry or who have been working in the industry in an entry level role.

Graduates will be able to carry out basic cellar hand tasks safely and efficiently under limited supervision.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements: For applicants under 20 years of age NCEA Level 1 is required. For applicants 20 years of age and over there are no minimum academic requirements. English language requirements: All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 5 issued within the last two years with no less than 5 in any band or equivalent. Other requirements: Applicants must complete a questionnaire about their background, reasons for wanting to undertake the Programme. Questionnaire provides information to ensure applicants are aware they may be subject to drug and alcohol testing while on their work placement component. The Certificate in Cellar Operations (Level 3) has aspects that require a certain level of physical strength and fitness. Students must be physically capable of completing all aspects of the programme. Please note that Wineries have drug and alcohol restriction requirements.
