What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, and fabrication industries with people who have sufficient underpinning knowledge, understanding, and practical skill to work under limited supervision as operators or trade assistants within their chosen discipline.

This qualification is designed for people already working in the mechanical engineering or engineering fabrication industry or people intending to complete a pre-trade qualification before entering the industry.

Graduates will be capable of performing a defined range of engineering tasks under limited supervision.

Minimum requirements

Entry to the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3) will be in accordance with the criteria specified in the TPP QMS and relevant student entry policy. Academic Entry: NCEA level 1 with 10 credits in Numeracy ((algebra, trigonometry, measurement recommended) and 10 credits in Literacy or Be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills Domestic applicants aged 20 years or above who do not meet the academic entry requirements, but who can demonstrate their skills, education and / or work experiences, may be eligible for special admission. Students must be physically capable of meeting programme requirements. Applicants are also required to attend an information session where students must demonstrate their ability, interest, motivation and commitment to succeed in the programme. English language: International applicants for whom English is not their first language will be required to show evidence of language competency, issued within the last two years, before being eligible to enrol in any programme. The level of competency required is outlined in Rule 18 and Appendix 2 of the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules 2013 and for a Level 3 certificate is: IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed NZ Certificate in English Language L3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined in Rule 18 and Appendix 2 of the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules 2013. For domestic applicants for whom English is not their first language evidence of language competency may be required.
