About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying industries with people who:
- have basic skills and knowledge in plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying
- have an awareness of the requirements of the regulatory environment, and
- are ready to enter an apprenticeship.
The New Zealand community will benefit from having graduates who are able to assist in ensuring public safety in the provision of gas, water services, and drainage.
Graduates will be capable of assisting with plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying work under supervision.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
To be eligible for entry, learners must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success. This will include consideration of the following: * learners must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme. * to have good English skills/reading to cope with standards, codes and theory material. Where there are more learners than places available in the programme, selection will be made on the basis of the following criteria: * Whether learners have completed three years of secondary education; * Learner academic achievement in NCEA Level 1 and/or NCEA Level 2, or Year 11 and/or Year 12 English and Mathematics It is important to notify prospective learners that if they intend to progress to a Plumbing, Drainlaying and/or Gasfitting apprenticeship programme, that after completion of that apprenticeship they will need to register with the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. The Board will undertake a Police Check to see if the graduate has a criminal record and will then decide whether the graduate is a fit and proper person to be registered. If the graduate has a criminal record this might exclude them from registration.
