About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to work independently and with only broad guidance as crew on vessels operating in unlimited waters.
The qualification is for qualified deck and engine room crew intending to advance to able seafarer roles and for people intending to begin a career in marine electro-technology.
Graduates of the Deck Crew strand will be able to carry out crewing duties at a support level to watchkeepers and or masters.
Graduates of the Electro-technology strand will be able to carry out crewing duties at a support level to electro-technical officers.
Graduates of the Engineering strand will be able to carry out crewing duties at a support level to engineers.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements for entry to the programme. English Language Requirements: All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 5.5 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent. Other requirements: Applicants for each Programme must hold the MNZ Licence (or equivalent) as listed below: Applicants for Maritime Crewing - STCW Deck Watch Rating / STCW Engine Watch Rating - no prior MNZ licence required Applicants for Maritime Crewing - STCW Able Seafarer Deck / STCW Able Seafarer Engine / STCW Electro-technical Rating must hold either: STCW Deck Watch Rating (for Deck Crewing strand) STCW Engine Watch Rating (for Engineering strand) There is no pre-requisite MNZ licence for the Electro-technical strand. Applicants should be aware that there are MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for the MNZ license which their programme contributes towards.
