About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain engine room and auxiliary equipment to entry-level Marine Engineer Class 6 (MEC 6) standards under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
The qualification is intended for new entrants to the industry or engine room crew intending to progress to roles as marine engineer.
Graduates will generally operate under broad supervision from the chief engineer and the vessel master.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

40 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits, or a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 3, or a recognised equivalent. Special and discretionary admission is available. It is recommended that akonga be employed or engaged in the Maritime industry. Must provide a Medical Certificate and be physically fit and capable of participating in the practical training component. International applicants are required to have an IELTS (General or Academic) score of 5.5 with no individual band lower than 5 from a single test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
