About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills necessary to take charge of, and maintain, the safety of vessels of less than 24 metres in length operating within restricted limits under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
The qualification is for people working as deck crew or people with suitable experience as a skipper on a recreational vessel intending to progress to the role of skipper on a restricted limits vessel.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic requirements There are no minimum academic requirements for entry. Other requirements Applicants will be made aware that they must meet the full MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements prior to commencing this programme if they wish to be eligible for the MNZ licence which this programme contributes towards. Applicants will be referred to the MNZ guidelines for Skipper Restricted Limits which can be found on the www.maritimenz.govt.nz website. It is recommended that applicants be currently employed within a commercial maritime operation and/or have ongoing access to commercial vessels and MNZ qualified skippers to assist with your completion of the SRL Competency Preparation Workbook and completion of 200 hours sea time. However, students can undertake the programme if they have access to a recreational vessel. Selection All candidates who meet the entry requirements are accepted on the programme; however, applicants will be provided with programme information to ensure the applicant is aware of the programme content, assessment policies and entry requirements and recommendations. There also maybe an interview for entry on to the programme to confirm that this is the appropriate programme in terms of their career progression. This may be conducted by skype or other electronic forums.
