About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the equine industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to assist in the stabling, care, and/or exercise of horses in the performance horse sectors of the equine industry.

The qualification is stranded to reflect the specialist skills required to work either in the harness industry, thoroughbred racing industry or the sporthorse industry.

Graduates will be able to contribute effectively in the workplace at entry-level with limited supervision.

Minimum requirements

To be eligible for admission to this programme, all applicants must meet three admission requirements: Requirements for either General, Special, or Discretionary admission Any additional Programme specific requirements English language requirements To be admitted to this programme all applicants must be at least 16 years of age on the date the programme starts, and meet the following requirements: expressed interest in working in the sporthorse sector, physical ability to work safely around horses and machinery, have a willingness to meet the attendance and academic requirements of the programme, have NCEA Level 2, commitment to complete the practical component at an equine workplace, be experienced riders who can rise to the trot and can canter. Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme by their expressed interest in working with sporthorses. Applicants over the age of 20 will also need to have the physical ability to work safely around horses and machinery and be experienced riders that can rise to the trot and can canter. Personal commitment and a belief in one s own ability to succeed are important personal traits and will always be taken into consideration during the selection process. Applicants who do not meet the general admission requirements stated above and who believe that they have the level of preparedness for study at this level may apply for discretionary admission. In assessing whether to grant discretionary admission the primary focus will be on the applicant s ability to demonstrate a likelihood to succeed in the programme. All decisions will be at the discretion of the Programme Manager with consultation from the relevant kaiako/tutors.
