About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is:
- To supply the food and beverage sector with employees who are able to provide service in cafes and unlicensed restaurants, quick-service restaurants, bars or clubs, restaurants offering table or buffet service, establishments catering functions in-house, or baristas.
- To provide a credential for those individuals who are employed as service personnel that will support their employment opportunities across a range of establishments in the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic service that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
The strands in this qualification allow graduates to specialise in an area of food and beverage service.
Graduates will be able to operate to provide food and/or beverage service in a casual dining or bar context.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Open entry. Applicants will be assessed for their ability to meet the academic, health and safety, and physical requirements of the programme. Evidence of English language competency where English is not a first language. Detailed Requirements Assessment is used to guide student enrolment into appropriate programmes and determine any support requirements to assist students with their study. Students must be able to confirm that they will have the physical capability to safely withstand 4-8 hour sessions of working in the commercial café/restaurant/barista environment. For health and safety purposes, where a candidate has specific medical needs or a medical condition, a medical certificate from the candidate s doctor may be required. For international applicants who come from non-English speaking backgrounds, an IELTS General or Academic score of 5.0 with no band score lower than 5.0, or an equivalent relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined in NZQF-related rules (Rule 18) is required. For domestic applicants for whom English is not their first language, evidence of language competency may be required.
