About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is:
- To provide the hospitality sector with junior chefs who have the knowledge and skills to produce basic dishes in a commercial kitchen.
- To provide a credential for those employed or interested in a career as chefs in junior positions, that will support their employment opportunities in a commercial kitchen across the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic cookery that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
Graduates will be able to operate in a commercial kitchen as chefs in a junior position producing basic dishes.

Minimum requirements
Academic requirements If you're a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and are between 16 to 19 years old, you can apply to study regardless of the qualifications you've achieved at school. If English isn't your first language, you may be required to provide evidence of your English language skills. Refer to the Acceptable Alternatives Chart or contact CPIT for an assessment.
