About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language who wish to develop their English language proficiency to pursue academic study requiring a high level of English language competency.

Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate independently and effectively in a wide range of academic situations with fluency and flexibility.

This qualification allows educational institutions and professional bodies to recognise the level at which the graduate can use English for academic purposes.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 4), New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4), or the demonstration of equivalent knowledge and skills. Demonstration of equivalent knowledge and skills can be either through: - Alternative English proficiency outcomes such as IELTS results, Cambridge University ESOL exam results, TOEFL test results or test results from the common European framework are acceptable refer to NZQA English proficiency outcomes (rule 18). - A test designed by NMIT will be used to identify the programme into which the student will be eligible for entry. This test will be able to be undertaken by applicants overseas where required through the use of suitable technology. A follow-up test will be undertaken once the student arrives in New Zealand to ensure the student is placed in the correct programme. In exceptional circumstances, an applicant under the age of 20 years who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme where they supply evidence of their ability to succeed on the programme.
